The MacGregor clan, originating from the central Scottish Highlands, is one of Scotland's oldest clans, with roots tracing back to the early 9th century and a claim of descent from the ancient Celtic royal family through Grig or, a son of Kenneth McAlpin. Historically, the MacGregor's faced severe persecution, particularly during the 16th and 17th centuries, due to their fierce resistance against attempts by the Campbells to control their lands. In 1603, the clan was outlawed by King James VI, leading to the suppression of their name and violent retribution. Despite this, the MacGregor's continued to fight for their rights, notably during the Jacobite uprisings, and the proscription was eventually lifted in 1774, allowing the clan to reclaim their heritage.
