Clan Robertson claims descent from the Celtic Earls of Atholl. The clan's name comes from the Gaelic for Stout Duncan, a staunch supporter of Robert the Bruce, who led the clan at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314. The clan later took the name Robertson from Robert Riach (Grizzled Robert), who captured the murderers of James I and was rewarded with a Crown charter in 1451, erecting his lands into the Barony of Struan. The Robertson's remained loyal to the Stuarts and fought alongside Montrose in the Wars of the Three Kingdoms. After the Restoration, Charles II granted a pension to Robertson of Struan.
