Clan Sinclair is of Norman origin, with the first known member being William de Sancto Clara, who received a grant of the barony of Roslin in Midlothian during the 12th century. Sir Henry St Clair of Roslin was a supporter of Robert the Bruce, and his son, Sir William, accompanied Sir James Douglas on a mission to the Holy Land, dying in battle against the Moors in Spain. In 1379, Henry Sinclair, the son of Sir William, acquired the earldom of Orkney through his father’s marriage to Isabella, Countess of Orkney. William, the 3rd Earl of Orkney, founded the famous Roslin Chapel in 1446 and was granted the earldom of Caithness in 1455.
