Product Description

needlepoint tapestry
Design your own custom needlepoint canvas online and turn your artwork into a personal stitching project. With your design printed directly onto the canvas, you’ll have a visual guide to follow as you stitch—whether you’re a beginner or an experienced needlepointer. Choose from 10, 12, 13, or 14-mesh interlock needlepoint canvas, 12-mesh double-thread needlepoint canvas, or 14-count Aida cross-stitch fabric. Lower mesh counts create larger stitches, while higher mesh counts allow for finer detail. Interlock canvas features a twisted construction that helps keep the mesh stable, while double-thread canvas uses paired threads and a stiff finish to support your stitching. For cross-stitch projects, choose Aida fabric with its easy-to-follow square weave. All three fabric types are made from 100% cotton and available in custom sizes to suit your project. Choose a plain cut edge or add a neat bias-bound finish in one of four colors.

Upload your own artwork, patterns, or photos to create personalized needlepoint canvas or printed cross-stitch fabric, ready for you to bring to life with every stitch.

Please note: This product includes your custom-printed canvas or fabric, a design reference sheet, and a color guide. Needlepoint yarn and embroidery floss are not included and must be purchased separately.

Each order includes a printed reference sheet showing your design, along with a color guide highlighting its main shades. Use these color swatches to help choose coordinating needlepoint yarn or embroidery floss. The guide represents the key colors in your artwork, rather than every individual shade, and provides a helpful reference for matching colors throughout your project.

Design Your Own Needlepoint Tapestry

Create a modern masterpiece with a traditional craft using your own custom-printed needlepoint canvas. Choose from 10-, 12-, or 14-mesh interlock needlepoint canvas, 12-mesh double-thread needlepoint canvas, or 14-count Aida cross-stitch fabric to suit your design and experience level. Turn your artwork into a stitching project, with your printed design providing a guide as you work.

Surface textures

Our custom-printed needlepoint canvas and Aida cross-stitch fabric are made from 100% cotton. Needlepoint canvas has an open mesh for stitching with suitable yarns and threads, while Aida has a clearly defined grid for cross-stitch. Choose a lower mesh count for larger stitches or a higher mesh count for finer detail.

Print detail

The bright white base helps showcase your design’s colors. For bold artwork with broad areas of color, choose 10-mesh interlock needlepoint canvas. For a balance of detail and stitch size, try either of our 12-mesh canvases. Our 14-mesh interlock canvas accommodates finer needlepoint details, while 14-count Aida is designed for cross-stitch projects. Simple outlines, clear color changes, and details large enough to translate into stitches will make your printed design easier to follow.

Canvas and fabric types

Our interlock needlepoint canvas, available in 10, 12, 13 and 14 mesh, uses twisted threads that lock around the crosswise threads to help keep the mesh stable as you stitch. Our 12-mesh double-thread needlepoint canvas has pairs of adjacent threads that form each stitch, with an open structure and a stiff finish that helps support larger projects such as cushion panels and embroidered pictures. For cross-stitch, choose our 14-count Aida fabric, woven with clearly defined squares and holes to guide the placement of each crossed stitch.

Usage

Create a one-of-a-kind project with your own custom-printed needlepoint canvas or Aida cross-stitch fabric. Upload original artwork, a favorite photo, or a decorative pattern, and choose your custom size. Your image is printed directly onto the canvas or fabric, providing a visual guide as you stitch. Create a personalized gift, a decorative piece for your home, or a design for your own needlework collection.

Edge finishing options

Choose a standard cut edge or add optional bias tape edging to your custom-printed needlepoint canvas or Aida cross-stitch fabric. Available in baby blue, baby pink, black, or off white, the bias tape is sewn around the outer edges to help reduce fraying and cover rough cut edges, making your project more comfortable to handle while stitching. Select an unfinished edge if you prefer to finish it yourself, or add bias tape edging for an additional charge.

Print Guideline

  • DPI-Print Guideline Icon

What's the best resolution to print in?

We print at 200dpi, which is a good combination of quality and file weight. Ideally your image should be scaled to 100% at 200dpi, this means that no resizing of your file occurs stopping any interpolation.

  • Jpeg-Tiff Print Guideline Icon

Should I save my file as a TIFF or JPEG?

For multi-colored or very detailed files we recommend using a tiff format, but they must be flattened. For simple colors and low detail files, a jpeg is fine.

  • RGB-CMYK Print Guideline Icon

Which color model should I choose? RGB or CMYK?

We advise providing images in the RGB color space. Specifically using the sRGB image profile, to achieve best color results. What does this mean? In your editing software, choose RGB as the working space and assign the image profile as sRGB (full name sRGB IEC61966-2.1)

  • GSM ICON

    What does GSM mean?

Grams per Square Meter (GSM) is an international standard for measuring the weight of paper or fabric. GSM uses the weight of a square meter (1000 x 1000mm) as an indication of the weight and thickness of a given fabric. We class 20-100gsm as light (summer fabrics, gauzes and fine silks), 101-249 gsm as medium (most clothing fabrics) and 250+ gsm as heavy (upholstery fabrics, and other specialist fabrics).

  • Fill Bleed Areas ICON

    What are bleed areas?

When designing your product, it’s best to make sure that your image is slightly larger than needed. In printing, the extra printed image is referred to as a “Bleed Area” or margin, and it is removed from the finished piece. A bleed area acts as a buffer for slight inconsistencies in the manufacturing process. however, it’s important to fill your bleed areas completely, or you may end up with white, unprinted strips along the edge of your finished product.

  • Transfer-Print Guideline Icon

Do you print on garments a customer supplies?

Unfortunately not. All our garments are printed on flat fabric, and sewn into finished products, which gives a better finished result and all-over print. We test meticulously so that we know what gets best results on our fabrics, and our facilities cater perfectly to them. We do however print sublimation paper to order, so if you have access to a heat press you can press your fabrics or flat garments easily.

  • Pattern Alignment Across Seams ICON

Can you Align a Pattern or design across panels of a garment?

We always strive for the greatest accuracy when printing and constructing your garments. However, due to unavoidable stretch or movement of the fabric during the stitching process, we cannot guarantee perfect pattern registration across garment seams. We are generally accurate within 2-3mm, which Is close enough for most patterns, but may show slight issues with detailed geometric patterns.

  • print label option icon

Can I print my own Labels?

Most of our garments now come with printable label space for you to add your own company information and branding! If you would like to sew in your own labels, we also offer Printed Fabric Labels here.

  • Eco friendly Printing

How is your fabric printing eco-friendly?

With environmental consciousness in mind, our fabrics are all printed using completely water based inks. This means no chemicals or solvents are used. Our heat fixing procedure fixes the colors and prints, avoiding the downsides of steaming, such as excess or contaminated water returning into the waste system. We have one facility in London where we conduct all the printing, production and fulfillment.

Please note: As we make everything by hand, all sizes may vary slightly.

Edge Finishing options?

Give your custom-printed needlepoint canvas or Aida cross-stitch fabric a neat finish with optional bias tape edging. Sewn around the outer edges, the binding helps reduce fraying and covers rough cut edges, making your fabric more comfortable to handle while stitching. Choose Unfinished Edge if you prefer to finish the edges yourself, or select Bias Tape Edging for an additional charge.

How do I know which colours to use and how to stitch?

We make it really easy. Each design is printed in full colour directly onto the canvas, so you can simply follow the image as you stitch — no need to interpret a traditional colour chart. Alongside this, every order includes a printed Colour Map Sheet with clear yarn colour references and easy-to-follow swatches. This helps you match your threads accurately while the printed canvas guides your stitching. This combination is unique to Contrado, giving you both a visual guide on the canvas and a simple reference for selecting the right colours.

How does printing on needlepoint tapestry work?

Create your own needlepoint or cross-stitch project at home with custom-printed canvas or fabric. Choose your preferred canvas fabric, then upload your artwork to our online design tool. We print your design directly onto the material, giving you a visual guide to follow as you stitch. Pick up your needle and your choice of needlepoint yarn or embroidery floss, and bring your design to life. Choose a yarn thickness or number of floss strands suited to your canvas or fabric and the coverage you want.

Is this suitable for all experience levels?

Absolutely. Our custom-printed needlepoint canvas and Aida cross-stitch fabric are suitable for beginners and experienced stitchers alike. Upload your own artwork and choose a custom size to create a personalized project. Choose from 10-, 12-, 13- and 14-mesh needlepoint canvas, including a double-thread option, or 14-count Aida for cross-stitch. Beginners may find the larger openings of 10-mesh canvas easier to work with, while higher mesh counts allow finer detail within the same area. 10 mesh: Larger stitches, ideal for bold shapes, simple patterns and larger areas of color. 12 mesh: A balance of detail and coverage, suited to designs with moderately fine features. 13 mesh: Slightly finer than 12 mesh, offering extra definition for lettering, floral patterns and more detailed designs. 14 mesh: Smaller stitches for finer patterns, lettering and intricate details. Double-thread canvas: Features paired threads, providing a traditional base for needlepoint and tapestry projects. 14-count Aida: An easy-to-follow square weave for cross-stitch, suited to designs built from small, uniform crosses.

Do you add White Space around my image?

We add a 3/4 inch white border to each edge to allow you to wrap the print around your tapestry frame or jig. If you require more space, please add this to your design.

What is this canvas made from?

Our high-quality canvases are all made from 100% cotton.

What is Interlock Needlepoint Canvas?

Available in 10, 12, 13 or 14 mesh, our interlock canvas is ideal for needlepoint, tapestry, Bargello, Gobelin stitches, and decorative filling stitches. Its twisted construction helps keep the mesh stable as you work. Choose a lower mesh for larger stitches and bold designs, or a higher mesh for finer detail.

What is Double-Thread Needlepoint Canvas?

Our 12-mesh double-thread canvas is suitable for traditional tapestry, needlepoint, and decorative embroidery, including cushion panels and embroidered pictures. Pairs of threads form each stitch, while its stiff finish supports larger projects. It can also be used as waste canvas to guide cross-stitch on other fabrics, with the canvas threads carefully removed after dampening.

What is Aida Cross-Stitch Fabric?

Our 14-count Aida is designed for cross-stitch, with clearly defined squares to help you create even, consistent stitches. It is ideal for stitched pictures, lettering, and decorative motifs, with backstitch used to add outlines and smaller details. Your printed design provides a visual guide as you turn your artwork into a personalized cross-stitch project.
